Dimensions:

Height – 48.5cm / Width – 95cm / Depth – 52cm

.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition consistent with age and use. There is general surface wear throughout including age related marks, knocks, scratches and staining to the top consistent with its original use as a working tool chest. The marks and darker areas appear to be historic workshop wear.

The hinges are later replacements and the lid shows expected wear along the edges from long term use. The interior remains clean and practical with the original fitted tray still present. Various small historic repairs and signs of practical use add to the piece’s authentic character. Structurally solid and sound with good honest wear from its working life. A genuine and practical antique pine trunk with plenty of character.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pine tool chests were crafted throughout the 18th and 19th centuries as portable storage containers for tradesmen, such as carpenters and joiners. Designed for durability and practicality, they were constructed using solid pine to protect specialized equipment during transport between workshops and job sites.

Traditional pine chests feature solid softwood timber assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners for structural integrity. Additional elements often include iron carrying handles, forged keyhole escutcheons, internal till boxes, and thick timber plinth bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed interior surfaces, and period-correct hardware such as cast or forged iron hinges. Look for natural wear patterns on the base, surface patination, and historic tool marks or faint painted owner markings on the exterior timber.

A pine chest functions effectively as a central coffee table in a living room, providing hidden storage while introducing textured wood tones. Alternatively, it serves as a storage bench at the foot of a bed or along an entry hallway to ground contemporary spaces with natural materials.

Clean the surface using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth to remove dust without saturating the timber. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, following the grain of the wood, to maintain moisture and preserve the natural patination.
