1900 - 1920
Description

Very Rare Heals Antique St. Ives Oak Cupboard- Stamped

A wonderful rare wider version of a Heals antique oak cupboard from the St.Ives range of Heals furniture. Originally this would have had a green stain to the outer which always fades away give the age, it has retained the green to the inside of the cupboard door. All pegged construction, complete with the original iron work and with a working lock and key. Stamped by the maker inside, would have had shelves inside originally, could be fitted with either shelves or a hanging rail to make it into a wardrobe. To the lower part is a drop down storage cupboard. In superb condition throughout, most probably a special order given the greater width, so highly probable that this is one of a kind that dates to 1900. We can have shelves or a hanging rail made to fit the interior, please enquire regarding pricing.

This rare Arts and Crafts solid oak cupboard from the St. Ives range dates to 1900 and exemplifies English Country House style. Constructed using pegged joints, the piece displays a warm oak timber colour with visible grain, a single panelled door, an overhanging cornice with dental-style mouldings, and a lower drawer fitted with a drop-down storage compartment. The exterior features hand-forged black wrought iron hardware, including prominent strap hinges, a central latch, and decorative corner brackets on the drawer. Measuring 191 cm in height, 144 cm in width, and 61 cm in depth, the interior retains traces of its original green finish on the inside of the door and includes a working lock and key, with the maker's stamp located internally. Today, this versatile storage piece serves as a striking standalone wardrobe or general cupboard in a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The interior can accommodate custom-fitted shelves or a hanging rail to suit modern storage requirements, providing a practical solution for hanging garments or linens. The substantial proportions and authentic Arts and Crafts ironwork make it a functional focal point in traditional or contemporary interiors.

Originating in the late 19th century as a reaction against industrial mass production, Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes handcrafted joinery, solid natural timber, functional forms, and visible structural fittings such as iron straps and tenon joints.

Edwardian and Arts and Crafts storage furniture typically utilised solid European oak, combined with hand-forged wrought iron or brass hardware and panelled timber construction for durability.

Authentic pieces feature exposed construction details like mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-turned ironwork, unvarnished or lightly waxed oak finishes, and occasionally stamped maker marks or brass plaques from historic makers.

A tall oak cupboard serves as a focal storage piece in modern bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces, pairing well with neutral plaster walls, natural linen textiles, and contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber and maintain the original patina, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or direct heat sources.
