This Georgian sterling silver decanter label takes the form of an octagonal plaque with canted corners and a triple reeded border. The surface exhibits a polished silver finish with engraved uppercase lettering spelling CLARET across the centre, complemented by a fine link suspension chain attached via two small loops. Observable details include surface scratching indicative of age and handling, alongside precise hand-engraved text. The object measures 2.4 cm high and 4 cm wide. Traditional decanter labels serve a practical function in domestic settings to identify beverages. In a contemporary interior, this silver piece sits atop a sideboard, bar cart, or drinks cabinet, suspended around the neck of a glass decanter or serving bottle holding wine. The portable design allows it to transfer easily between different vessels during dining or entertaining.

FAQs

Decanter labels, also known as wine tickets or bottle tags, originated in the eighteenth century to identify liquid contents stored in clear or opaque glass decanters and unlabelled bottles.

Georgian wine labels were typically handcrafted from sterling silver using metalworking techniques such as die-stamping, hand-engraving, and chasing, complete with soldered suspension chains.

Authentic Georgian examples feature official hallmarks including the maker mark, lion passant, town mark, and date letter, alongside period engraving typography and subtle wear around the chain loops.

Draping period silver wine labels over modern or vintage glass decanters on a drinks trolley or sideboard adds functional detail and historical interest to home bar displays.

Clean gently using a soft cotton cloth alongside specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid abrasive materials or prolonged immersion in water to safeguard delicate chain links and hallmarks.
