Georgian/regency Strawberry Diamond Cut Glass Cylindrical Pickle Jar and Cover

19th century
Description

This is a scarce late Georgian cut glass pickle jar dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.

The jar is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the base consistent with some 200 years of age and use.

The body of the jar is cylindrical, and is has been wheel-cut with prism cuts at the shoulders above a wide band of hobnail diamonds above a prism cut and a basal band of finger flute cutting. It measures 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The base is star-cut to the edge. The lid is of radially cut mushroom form, and is probably the original. Assembled, the jar measures 13 cm (5.2 inches) in height. There are a number of tiny flea-bite chips to some of the cut facets, including the edge of the lid peg. There are no other chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration.

A rare survivor in excellent condition for its type. It weighs in at 525 g. (~ 1 lb. 3 oz.).

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Strawberry diamond cutting is a hand-cut glass motif popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, featuring raised diamond facets with tiny cross-hatched incisions on their flat tops. This technique created enhanced light refraction and tactile surface texture on heavy lead crystal tableware.

Georgian glassware was manufactured using lead crystal, formed by adding lead oxide to silica glass. This composition produced a dense glass with high refractive qualities, clear tone, and a characteristic resonance when tapped.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut variations rather than machine perfection, sharp edges on cut facets, and slight wear on contact surfaces like the base rim. Additionally, period lead glass is noticeably heavy and often features star-cut bases or ground stopper joints.

Clear cut-glass vessels function as decorative accents on dining tables, sideboards, or open kitchen shelving. Arranging clear glass pieces together allows ambient light to catch the cut facets, creating subtle reflections in bright or ambient lighting settings.

Hand wash lead glass in lukewarm water using mild liquid detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding hot water to reduce thermal shock risk. Dry immediately with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spotting and preserve the clarity of the cut facets.
