This Victorian pier cabinet from around 1870 is veneered in richly figured warm brown burr walnut with rosewood and ebony inlay. The piece stands on a plinth base and has a single glazed door fitted with an ormolu keyhole escutcheon. Additional decorative elements include gilt brass ormolu corner mounts at the top and bottom of the frame, starburst marquetry inlay on the frieze and sides, and delicate inlaid stringing. The interior houses two wooden shelves against a plain wooden back panel. Measuring 98.5 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 29.5 cm deep, the cabinet functions well in a study, drawing room, or hallway to display small collections of books, ceramics, or decorative objects.

Originally designed to sit against the wall between windowsknown as the piera Victorian pier cabinet is a low, narrow display cabinet or bookcase that typically features a single glass door, decorative timber veneers, and ornate metal mounts.

Cabinetmakers during the mid-to-late 19th century frequently employed burr walnut, rosewood, and mahogany veneers, decorated with ebony line inlays, geometric marquetry, and gilded bronze or brass ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick wood veneers over secondary woods such as pine or oak, natural glass imperfections, and cast metal mounts secured with original slotted screws.

Position the cabinet in an entryway, alcove, or home office, styling the interior shelves with curated ceramics, art books, or glassware to create a refined focal point within the room.

Keep the wooden surfaces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, clean the glass with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax paste to the timber annually.
