Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French hall lanterns originated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as practical lighting fixtures for draughty entryways and vestibules. The enclosed glass design protected open candle flames from wind while allowing maximum illumination to disperse through the entrance hall.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed using cast brass, bronze, or copper frames, often finished with fire-gilding or ormolu techniques. The enclosure incorporates curved or flat blown-glass panels, housing internal candle branches or cluster sockets.

Authentic period lanterns display evidence of hand-crafted assembly, such as irregular cast-metal joinery, hand-cut screw threads, and minor imperfections or air bubbles within hand-blown glass. Original gilding often shows subtle wear and natural oxidation in crevices rather than uniform modern plating.

A classic glazed lantern serves as a focal point when hung in double-height entrance foyers, stairwells, or central corridors. Pairing period metalwork with neutral walls or architectural moulding creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary space.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to clean metal surfaces without disrupting original gilding or patina. Avoid chemical abrasives or brass polishes, and clean the glass panels carefully using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame.
