Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire Revival decorative metalwork emerged in the late nineteenth century, recreating the neoclassical aesthetic popularized during Napoleon Bonapartes reign. The style is characterized by symmetrical forms, classical winged figures, heavy plinths, and contrasting surface finishes such as patinated bronze paired with gilded mounts.

These pieces were typically constructed from cast bronze, brass, and marble or granite bases. The components were created using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing for precise surface detail and fire-gilding or electroplating to achieve contrast between dark bronze and gold highlights.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction method, including hand-threaded central rods, square nuts, and hand-chiselled decorative chasing. Age-appropriate oxidisation within crevices, natural wear to gilded surfaces, and considerable weight due to solid metal casting also indicate period origin.

A pair of candelabra can be displayed symmetrically on a dining sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table. Placing them against neutral backwalls allows the dark patinated figures and metallic gilding to act as architectural anchors within minimalist or eclectic design schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a delicate brush for intricate crevices. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive detergents, or moisture, as these treatments strip historical patination and damage fragile gilding.
