18th Century Period Secretaire Bookcase

18th century
Description

George III 18th century Thomas Chippendale period secretaire bookcase.

The cavetto cornice with a dentil moulded decoration sits above two astragal glazed doors that open to reveal three adjustable shelves. The shelves with moulded mahogany facings are original to the secretaire bookcase.

The secretaire fall open to reveal an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes with a central cupboard door concealing a secret hidden drawer. The solid highly figured mahogany cupboard door to the secretaire is vibrant and sets the tone for the understated quality which can often be seen in fine 18th century English furniture.

The secretaire drawer is fitted with the original gilt brass rococo style handles above a pair of figured mahogany panelled doors that open to reveal three original trays.

The low waisted bottom section to the bookcase is figured with flamed mahogany within the vertical and horizontal panels and raised on the original ogee bracket feet.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a tall piece of case furniture that combines an upper glazed cabinet for books with a lower section featuring a pull-out or drop-down writing drawer alongside additional storage drawers or cupboards.

Cabinetmakers during the 18th century predominantly utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating brass hardware, hand-blown glass panes, and oak or pine secondary timbers for interior drawer linings.

Authentic Georgian pieces typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, oak secondary wood, original brass escutcheons or drop handles, and hand-fitted astragal glazing bars on the cabinet doors.

Place the piece as a focal point against a neutral or rich wall, filling the upper shelves with bound books or decorative ceramics while utilising the concealed desk drawer for home office organisation.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and lacquer deterioration.
