Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Originating in 18th and early 19th-century Britain, a George III secretaire bookcase combines a pull-out or drop-front writing desk concealed within a chest of drawers below a double-door glazed bookcase upper section.

These cabinets were constructed from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, often decorated with satinwood or boxwood stringing, featuring hand-cut dovetail joinery, blown glass panes, and brass drop handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques including hand-sawn timber back panels, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, subtle irregularities in original glazed panes, and genuine historical wear along drawer runners.

A mahogany secretaire bookcase functions as a focal architectural piece in a study, drawing room, or expansive hallway, providing concealed desktop functionality alongside curated glass display space for literature and objects.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to minimise timber movement, dust surfaces using a soft dry microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to conserve the patinated finish.
