This Victorian cranberry glass covered cheese dish comprises a rounded dome-shaped lid set upon a matching scalloped under-plate. The piece is constructed from deep cranberry red glass ornamented with gold leaf, white enamel dots, and hand-painted floral panels enclosed within central cartouches, finished with a smooth ball finial atop the lid. Measuring 12.5 cm high and 18 cm wide, the vessel sits compactly on surfaces. Suitable for domestic display or serving functions, the dish integrates into dining room settings and functions effectively when placed upon a sideboard top. The vibrant red tones, gilt filigree work, and decorative floral motifs contribute visual character to traditional home interiors while maintaining a functional design for tabletop use.

FAQs

Cranberry glass, produced by adding gold salts to molten glass, gained wide popularity across Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for decorative table accessories such as cheese domes, butter dishes, and bowls.

Traditional cranberry glass achieves its signature red hue through colloidal gold in the glass mixture, which is then hand-blown and frequently ornamented with hand-applied enamel paint, gold gilding, and fused glass finials.

Authentic period pieces feature minor hand-blown variations, hand-ground bases or pontil marks, and raised, hand-painted gold or enamel ornamentation rather than modern uniform transfers.

A decorative glass dome can be placed on a dining table, sideboard top, or display cabinet, functioning either as an accent serving piece for entertaining or as a decorative container on open shelving.

Hand-gilded and enamelled antique glass should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive cloths, heat, or dishwashers that could wear away the delicate gold leaf.
