Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lacquered cabinets on stands became prominent across Europe during the late 17th and 18th centuries as trade with East Asia expanded. European craftsmen developed japanning, a imitation lacquer technique using resin-based varnishes, to satisfy the high demand for Asian export goods and Chinoiserie decorative art.

These cabinets were constructed using timber substrates, predominantly oak or pine for European japanned pieces, coated with built-up layers of resin, varnish, and pigment. Decorative elements were executed in gilt paint or raised gesso relief, complemented by pierced and engraved brass hinges, corner mounts, and lockplates.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-hammered or hand-chased brass hardware, and subtle craquelure or age-related shrinkage lines across the lacquered surfaces. Victorian or 20th-century reproductions often feature machine-made screws, uniform surface wear, and less refined gilded details.

A lacquered cabinet on stand functions as a focal architectural statement piece when positioned against neutral or deeply painted walls. Pairing dark japanned surfaces with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast between historical narrative and modern texture.

Maintain stable humidity levels and keep lacquered furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, or moisture sources to prevent cracking and lifting of the varnish. Surface cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial solvents, water, or abrasive polishes.
