George III Sterling Silver Supper Dish, Cover & Lampstand, London 1818

19th century
Description

A complete George III sterling silver supper dish with domed cover and original lampstand, hallmarked London 1818, maker's mark W·B, probably William Burwash or possibly William Bateman I, the spirit burner with London hallmarks for 1819.

The circular dish with gadrooned border, the domed cover surmounted by an ornate cast foliate-scroll handle, raised on a conforming stand with twin loop handles and four acanthus-capped supports terminating in lion's paw feet, the cross-stretcher fitted with its detachable sterling silver spirit lamp — a component very often lost from surviving examples. The dish and stand fully hallmarked with maker's mark W·B, lion passant, leopard's head crowned, date letter c for 1818 and George III duty mark; the cover part-marked with lion passant and date letter, as customary for the period; the spirit burner separately hallmarked London 1819, maker's mark T.B.

A handsome and substantial example of high Regency dining silver, entirely typical of the grand sideboard service of an English country house breakfast — designed to keep devilled kidneys, kedgeree or bacon warm above the gentle flame of the spirit lamp.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian silver supper dish, often fitted with a heating lampstand, was designed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to keep food warm during multi-course formal dinners and buffets.

Regency silver hollowware from 1818 was crafted from solid sterling silver with cast handles, raised domed covers, gadrooned rims, and hand-chased decorative elements.

Authentic George III silver features official English hallmarks, including the monarch profile duty mark, the lion passant indicating sterling purity, the leopard head for the London assay office, a date letter, and a registered maker mark.

An antique silver supper dish serves as a centrepiece on a formal dining table, a decorative accent on a sideboard, or an element within a curated drinks trolley display.

Clean sterling silver using a specialised silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, rinsing with warm water and drying immediately to prevent tarnish and water spotting.
