Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marriage chests, also known as dower chests or coffers, were traditionally commissioned in rural Scandinavia to store a brides linens and textiles for her future household. These pieces were frequently painted with the initials of the couple, relevant dates, and folk art motifs such as floral garlands to commemorate the union.

These chests were typically constructed from local softwoods such as pine or fir using traditional joinery methods. The exterior was finished with hand-mixed mineral pigments and distemper or oil paints, often accented with wrought iron hardware, lock plates, and carry handles.

Authentic period examples display natural surface wear, faint brushwork texture, and oxidisation around iron fittings. Original hand-painted details often show uneven fading, craquelure, and wear on high-touch areas such as the lid rim and around the keyhole.

A painted trunk functions effectively as a coffee table in a living area, at the foot of a bed for extra bedding, or inside an entryway to provide concealed storage. The muted pigments and distressed finish contrast well alongside clean contemporary lines or neutral linen textiles.

To protect historical painted surfaces, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, direct sunlight, and extreme humidity fluctuations. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral microcrystalline wax sparingly if recommended by a professional restorer.
