This pair of nineteenth-century bedside cabinets dates from 1890 and reflects the Aesthetic Movement style. Constructed from wood, the cabinets are finished in a pale yellow paint and decorated with hand-painted brown foliate scrolls across the drawer and door fronts. Each piece stands on small turned feet and incorporates turned faux bamboo corner columns with horizontal banding details. The front hardware consists of circular metal knobs centered on each of the four faux-drawer fronts. The cabinets measure 85 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. In a modern home, these bedside cabinets function practically beside a bed for storing books and nighttime essentials. The yellow painted finish and faux bamboo turnings suit a bedroom decorated in a traditional, French chateau, or eclectic style. They also serve as useful storage tables in a guest room, study, or living room space next to a sofa or armchair.

Faux bamboo bedside cabinets are 19th-century storage units constructed from carved or turned timber to imitate natural bamboo cane. Originating during the Chinoiserie and Aesthetic Movement revivals, these pieces offered exotic visual styling adapted for Western bedroom layouts.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid softwoods, such as pine or beech, which were turned on a lathe to create characteristic bamboo nodes. The surfaces were subsequently painted, stained, or lacquered, frequently featuring hand-painted botanical or foliate ornamentation.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved or lathe-turned timber mouldings rather than moulded plastic or modern composite materials. Additional indicators include period joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware, and natural paint patina with age-appropriate wear.

These cabinets function effectively as nightstands flanking a bed or as occasional side tables in a living space. Pairing them with contemporary ceramics or tailored upholstery creates a balanced contrast between historical detailed paintwork and modern minimalist lines.

Maintain painted surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning solutions, excess moisture, and direct sunlight, which can cause paint lifting, pigment fading, or timber warping over time.
