A superb Victorian Scottish longcase clock by John McNeish (also recorded as McNeith) of Falkirk, presented in excellent working order. The eight-day movement sits within an impressive hood featuring a swan-neck pediment, delicate stringing, and well-balanced proportions.
The painted dial is richly decorated with four classical female figures in the spandrels, each representing virtues such as Hope, Justice, Peace, or the Arts. The arch displays a finely executed oval scene of a seated classical figure with a lion. The cream dial, with its black Roman numerals, also includes subsidiary seconds and date dials, adding both function and charm.
John McNeish/McNeith is recorded among Falkirk’s early 19th-century clockmakers, known for their solid craftsmanship, well-proportioned cases, and decorative Scottish dial painting. Clocks bearing his name are sought after for their quality and strong regional identity.
