We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, were developed in the mid-17th century following the invention of the pendulum movement. By the 18th century, British clockmakers refined the mechanism to include weight-driven eight-day and three-train movements enclosed within tall timber cases to protect the pendulum and weights.

The exterior cases were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Internal movements utilised brass plates and steel gears, while dials featured cast brass spandrels, silvered chapter rings, and engraved copper or iron plates.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut joinery, hand-cast brass dial ornamentation, and period-correct movement constructions such as crown wheel or anchor escapements. Signs of natural oxidation on metal components and irregular hand-planed timber surfaces further confirm age.

Positioning a tall clock in an entrance hallway, stairwell landing, or formal study creates an architectural focal point. Pairing dark mahogany timber with neutral walls and contemporary tailored upholstery provides balanced visual contrast.

Keep the timber casing in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or cracking. Movement mechanisms require professional oiling and horological servicing every five to seven years to ensure functional operation.
