Japanese Hichozan Shinpo Eggshell Porcelain Vase, C.1860–1880
£450 $601 €526
A finely painted Japanese export porcelain beaker vase produced in the Arita region circa 1860–1880. This elegant eggshell porcelain vessel was created for the Western market during the early Meiji export boom and reflects the delicate potting and refined decorative quality associated with Hichozan Shinpo wares.
The decoration features lively theatrical and genre scenes with children, performers, bows, fans and hobby horses painted in rich overglaze enamels and gilding. The animated figures and stylised costumes reflect the Kabuki-inspired imagery popular in late Edo and early Meiji export porcelain. The rim is finished with a delicate gilt border.
The underside bears the red overglaze mark “Hichozan Shinpo zo”. The Hichozan Shinpo name referred not to a single kiln but to a major export consortium directed by the merchant Tashiro Monzaemon (1816–1900), who coordinated porcelain production in Arita for export to Europe and America. Orders were placed with some of the finest works...hops in the region, including the famous Fukagawa family kilns.
During the Meiji period the Hichozan Shinpo-sei brand was used on export wares produced by several Arita makers as well as the Mikawachi kilns. The mark is generally associated with production around 1860–1880, during the renewed export expansion following Japan’s reopening to international trade.
The exceptionally light body and refined hand-painted decoration make this an attractive and highly collectible example of early Japanese export porcelain.
