This nineteenth-century English country footstool stands on four dark turned mahogany legs with a rich brown finish and bulbous upper sections. The square top features newly applied pale green herringbone fabric complemented by small metal stud trim at each of the four corners. The solid timber frame provides a sturdy support base for the padded cushion, combining traditional joinery with clean, low-profile lines. The piece measures 40.5 cm high by 80 cm wide and 80 cm deep. Such a proportion suits placement at the foot of a bed or beside a low armchair in a traditional sitting room, serving as a comfortable resting place for feet or as an occasional surface for books and trays. The combination of warm polished wood and textured woven textile integrates well into classic interior schemes, bringing practical function and understated character to domestic spaces.

FAQs

Historically used in European interiors from the eighteenth century onwards, footstools provided elevation from cold floors and added ergonomic comfort alongside armchairs.

Traditional footstools combine solid timber frames, such as beech or oak, with webbed or spring cushioning covered in woven textiles and finished with metal upholstery tacks.

Authentic historical pieces often feature hand-turned wooden legs, hand-tacked upholstery nails, and natural wood wear consistent with age rather than uniform machine finishing.

A square upholstered footstool can serve as a flexible centrepiece in a sitting room, functioning both as a footrest and as an informal coffee table when topped with a wooden tray.

Vacuum woven upholstery regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, treat spills immediately with a dry cloth, and wax the exposed turned wooden legs periodically.
