Pair of Antique Swedish Satin Birch Marble Top Bedside Cabinets

19th century
Description

A beautiful pair of antique Swedish satin birch marble top bedside cabinets. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, they are beautifully designed and are a useful size. The satin birch has gorgeous grain patterns and colour tones, contrasting nicely with the original cream marble tops.

We have had them stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, they are in excellent condition. There is just some incredibly minor wear to the marble tops, with no chips or cracks.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of bedside cabinets dates from the 1890 period in a Swedish Biedermeier style. Each piece is constructed from satin birch with warm amber tones and natural grain patterns, finished with a white marble top, ebonised round pull knobs, and shaped aprons along the base. The woodwork includes single upper drawers above lower cupboard doors, supported by integrated cutout feet, while the marble tops display minor signs of age. Each cabinet measures 75 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Suitable for use in a bedroom flanking a bed, these cabinets provide accessible bedside storage surfaces and enclosed cabinet space for lamps, books, and night-time essentials. The neutral marble surfaces and warm timber tones coordinate with various bedroom interiors and furniture styles, fitting neatly into traditional or contemporary domestic spaces.

FAQs

Swedish satin birch furniture is defined by its use of indigenous birch veneers displaying a flame-like grain pattern and golden tone, prominent during the Gustavian and Biedermeier periods.

These cabinets were typically built using softwood frames veneered with cut satin birch, finished with natural stone or marble slab tops, and fitted with turned wood or cast brass hardware.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-cut joinery inside the drawers, natural age-related colour variation in the wood grain, and original stone tops showing historical wear.

Positioning a matching pair alongside a contemporary fabric or timber bed frame creates balanced contrast, bringing texture and natural warmth to the space.

Veneered wood requires dusting with a soft cloth and occasional clear beeswax polish, while marble surfaces should be cleaned using a pH-neutral damp cloth and kept dry.
