Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This small Georgian coffer dates from the 18th century and is made of oak with a dark brown finish. The piece has a plank construction comprising a flat hinged lid, slab end supports, and visible iron hardware including strap hinges on the top and a latch chain on the front that hooks into a loop. Age-related signs of wear and tear appear across the surfaces of the timber, alongside subtle textural variations in the dark brown shade. Measuring 36 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 32.5 cm deep, the coffer provides compact proportions suited to practical storage needs. Position this versatile item in a hallway, bedroom, or living space to hold linens, books, or everyday household items while adding a rustic farmhouse character to the interior. The low profile allows placement beneath windows or at the foot of a bed, while the flat top surface functions additionally as a display area for decorative objects or small plants. The sturdy construction ensures everyday utility within a home setting.

FAQs

Coffers were primary storage vessels in historic European households, used for securing clothing, linens, and personal valuables. Made predominantly from native timber, these chests represented foundational domestic furniture prior to the widespread adoption of the chest of drawers.

Period coffers feature hand-planed oak planks, wooden peg joinery, and hand-forged iron hardware such as strap hinges and latches. Construction often incorporates board end supports or mortise and tenon joints without modern mechanical fasteners.

Authentic pieces display irregular tool marks from hand adzes, hand-forged ironwork with natural oxidisation, and slight movement or shrinkage in the timber boards over time. Fasteners typically consist of wooden trunnels or hand-wrought nails rather than modern machine-cut screws.

A small oak coffer functions effectively as a coffee table, low hallway console, or storage vessel at the foot of a bed. The dark timber tone provides visual weight and historical grounding alongside modern upholstered furniture and neutral wall finishes.

Maintain timber stability by positioning the coffer away from direct heat sources and damp areas. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually to preserve the surface patination.
