Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sword chest is a long, narrow wooden coffer originally designed to store edged weapons, tools, or household textiles during the 17th and 18th centuries. Typically constructed from solid oak boards, these chests featured simple joinery and heavy iron lockplates to secure valuable possessions.

Traditional sword chests were constructed using solid oak planks held together with hand-cut nails or wooden dowels, often following a six-board design. The side panels extended downwards to form shaped end supports, and hand-forged iron hinges and lockplates were installed for security.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular thickness in the oak boards, and hand-forged ironwork with natural oxidisation. Look for original iron strap hinges, pit-saw marks on the reverse, and authentic wear around the base and keyhole.

An antique oak coffer functions as an anchor piece at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or along a hallway. Pairing the dark oak timber with modern neutral textiles, linen upholstery, or contemporary artwork creates an engaging contrast between historical character and modern design.

Maintain historical oak by applying a beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood grain and preserve the patination. Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent timber movement, shrinkage, or splitting.
