Antique Spanish Painted Blanket Chest with Moorish Style Decoration, Circa 1800

19th century
Description

A striking Spanish provincial painted blanket chest (arcón) dating from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, decorated with vibrant polychrome ornament influenced by traditional Moorish and Mudéjar design.

The chest is constructed in solid timber and features richly painted geometric and stylised motifs in warm reds, ochres, blues and creams. These decorative patterns reflect the long influence of Islamic decorative arts within Spanish craftsmanship, particularly in rural furniture where bold painted surfaces were used to transform everyday objects into decorative pieces.

The end panels display intricate hand-painted designs framed within coloured borders, while the top retains traces of the original painted decoration across the plank boards. At the centre is a hand-forged iron handle, a typical feature of Spanish storage chests of this period.

Known in Spain as arcónes, these large chests were used for storing blankets, textiles and household belongings. Their robust construction and generous internal space made them essential pieces of furniture in traditional Spanish homes.

The surface shows the wonderful wear and patina of age, with areas of fading and rubbing that give the piece considerable character while preserving the original decoration.

Today, this chest makes a superb decorative piece and works equally well as a blanket chest, storage trunk, or statement coffee table, particularly suited to rustic, Mediterranean, Spanish, or eclectic interiors.

A highly example of Spanish folk art furniture combining bold colour, traditional craftsmanship and historic character.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Spanish Moorish style blanket chests, influenced by Mudejar design traditions, combine Islamic architectural motifs with Iberian woodworking practices. Popular from the 17th through early 19th centuries, these trunks feature intricate painted panels and carved relief work.

These pieces were typically constructed from local softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or walnut, assembled with hand-forged iron hardware, latches, and strap hinges, and decorated with mineral-based paint pigments.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-carved blind arcading along the plinth base, hand-forged iron lockplates with functional latch mechanisms, natural paint patina with age-appropriate surface wear, and pegged joinery.

Position the coffer in an entryway, living room, or hallway to serve as a strong focal anchor. Balance the ornate polychrome exterior with neutral plaster walls, contemporary linen upholstery, or minimalist architectural accents.

Dust the exterior gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding water or chemical cleaning products that might compromise historic polychrome paint layers. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent wood shrinkage and keep the item away from direct heat sources.
