Victorian Silver Mounted Easel Mirror 1897

19th century
Description

This large VICTORIAN SILVER MOUNTED EASEL MIRROR was made by the well-known silversmith Henry Matthews in 1897.

The mirror is mounted with a silver surround with pierced lattice, scroll and floral decoration and has a blank cartouche to the top. The easel mount is covered in the original blue velvet material.

Despite the mirror being over 125 years old, the silver mount is in excellent condition with no broken, missing, or damaged pieces. The blue velvet material is in amazing condition with no tears or wear and clearly the mirror has had little actual use during its long life. Unfortunately, the mirror itself is showing signs of age and has some fogging and spotting which is not unusual for a mirror of this age.

A fabulous Antique Silver Mounted Mirror in excellent condition which would look stunning in any setting.

This Victorian silver-mounted easel mirror dates to 1897 and originates from the workshop of silversmith Henry Matthews. The rectangular mirror has a bevelled glass plate set within a sterling silver mount decorated with pierced lattice work, floral patterns, and Rococo scrolls. A vacant cartouche sits at the top centre of the frame. The reverse and easel mount are covered in dark blue velvet. The silver surround remains intact, while the mirror plate exhibits visible fogging and dark spotting from age. The blue velvet backing shows no tears or surface wear. Measuring 29 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the table mirror functions as a decorative accessory for a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or hallway. The easel support allows the piece to stand upright on flat horizontal surfaces. The combination of reflective glass, polished metal filigree, and dark textile backing provides visual contrast for traditional interiors.

Victorian Rococo Revival silver mirrors featured intricate pierced lattice, foliage, and scrollwork mounted onto fabric-covered backing structures. Popular in the late nineteenth century, these tabletop mirrors incorporated decorative cartouches and bevelled glass plates for bedroom dressing tables.

These mirrors consist of a stamped or pierced silver surround, usually sterling silver, affixed to a plush dark velvet or morocco leather backboard, supported by an hinged easel stand and framing a bevelled mirror glass plate.

Authentic British examples carry official assay marks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. The silver frame is generally lightweight sheet silver pressed into shape and pinned to a wooden or textile core.

Place the mirror on a modern dressing table, console table, or sideboard alongside minimalist ceramics or modern accessories to create contrast between detailed historical metalwork and clean contemporary surfaces.

Dust the velvet backing gently with a soft brush, and clean the silver surround using a silver polishing cloth while avoiding liquid cleaners that could seep into or damage the underlying fabric mount.
