This pair of French neoclassical wall lights, produced around 1930 in the style of Maison Baguès, is made of gilt bronze and brass with an antique gold finish. The design incorporates a pierced ribbon bow finial at the top, a backplate adorned with foliate accents, twin scrolling hunting horn arms with trumpet bobeche drip pans, and dangling tassel details at the base, holding white candle-style lights with clear bulbs. The metal shows an original patination, and the wiring is fully updated with PAT testing. Measuring 41 cm high, 27 cm wide and 13 cm deep, these wall lights suit placement on a narrow wall space or flank a fireplace mirror in a French chateau interior. They provide ambient illumination when mounted in hallways, drawing rooms or dining areas.

French Neoclassical wall sconces typically feature motifs inspired by classical antiquity, such as ribbons, bows, tassels, laurel wreaths, and musical instruments like hunting horns. Produced extensively during the eighteenth century and revived in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by ateliers like Maison Bagues, these fixtures emphasise symmetry and balanced proportion.

High-end French wall lights were predominantly crafted from cast bronze or brass, which was subsequently chased and finished with gilding or patination. Electrical components were retrofitted or integrated into later production using ceramic or painted metal candle drips.

Authentic French bronze sconces demonstrate heavy cast metal construction, detailed hand-chasing on decorative elements, and original mounting plates or maker stamps on the reverse. Screws and threads are frequently non-standard or hand-cut on older examples.

Gilt wall lights provide decorative focal points when positioned flanking a mantelpiece, framing a central mirror, or mounted along a hallway. Their metallic finish complements both modern painted walls and traditional papered backdrops.

Clean gilt bronze sconces using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush to remove dust from detailed relief work. Avoid liquid polishes, abrasive pads, or chemical cleaners, as these can strip original gilding or lacquered finishes.
