These 1920 French Neoclassical wall lights are made of giltwood, gold leaf, and metal, finished in a gold colour. Each piece displays a top ribbon bow, a central carved eagle flanked by a pair of scrolling branches, a fluted central shaft, and wheat stalks. The structured design elements include turned wooden lower finials and detailed leaf carvings surrounding the central figures. The lighting fixture measures 114 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Such wall lights suit placement in a hallway, dining room, or drawing room, particularly on a narrow wall space to provide accent lighting. They mount directly to a vertical surface and connect to a domestic electrical supply for interior illumination.

FAQs

Louis XVI style wall lights are characterised by classical symmetry, geometric proportions, and motifs derived from Greco-Roman antiquity. Typical design elements include ribbon bows, fluted columns, urns, laurels, and carved avian features finished in gold leaf.

Traditional giltwood sconces are hand-carved from softwood timbers, coated with layers of gesso glaze, and finished using water or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf. Metal wiring and candle nozzles were added or retrofitted for functional lighting.

Authentic giltwood displays subtle variations from hand-tooling, visible seams where wood joints meet, and natural wear showing red or grey clay bole under the worn gold leaf. Modern reproductions often use molded resin or uniform sprayed gold paint instead of hand-carved wood and leaf gilding.

Giltwood wall lights can be mounted in pairs to frame a central focal point such as an overmantel mirror, artwork, or entryway console table. The warm gold tone provides architectural contrast against neutral painted walls or dark wallpapered spaces.

Dust giltwood fixtures gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking the thin gold leaf. Never use water, liquid solvents, or commercial furniture polishes, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso backings and damages the gilding.
