Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of French wall lights from the early 20th century follows a French Chateau style, manufactured from giltwood, gold leaf, and metal with a gold colour. Each wall sconce features an elongated pierced leaf backplate with acanthus leaf carving, pediment cresting, and scrollwork, accompanied by two metal leaf scrolling arms, circular wooden scalloped bobeche drip pans, and white candle sleeves with clear light bulbs. The items show original gilded patination and include aged brass screws for fixing and spare bulbs. Each light measures 51 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. They suit placement on narrow wall spaces in a home today.

FAQs

French giltwood wall lights, or appliques, gained prominence during the eighteenth century within Rococo and Neoclassical interiors. They typically feature intricate hand-carved foliate patterns finished with gold leaf, crafted to reflect warm candlelight across grand rooms.

Carvers fashioned the structural backplates and arms from softwoods like linden or pine before coating them in layers of gesso. The surface was smoothed, prepared with clay bole, and gilded using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-carving variations rather than moulded plaster uniformity. They frequently display natural wear to the gilding that reveals the underlying red or yellow clay bole, alongside evidence of conversion from candle sockets to early wiring.

Mounting giltwood sconces on either side of a central mirror, artwork, or fireplace creates architectural balance. The warm gold tone contrasts effectively against modern neutral or dark paint finishes.

Remove dust using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can strip water-gilding or dissolve soft gesso bases. Ensure any electrical components are periodically inspected by a qualified professional.
