Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 18th-century wall lights, often referred to as sconces or appliques, typically feature hand-carved timber backplates coated in gesso and finished with genuine gold leaf. Design movements of this period emphasized symmetrical foliate motifs, acanthus leaves, and slender, sweeping candle arms.

Makers carved the structural frames from woods such as pine or lime, applying layers of chalk-based gesso to refine detail before laying water-gilded or oil-gilded gold leaf. Candle sockets and drip pans were carved directly into the arms or integrated via concealed iron pins.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age-related wear, such as hand-carving marks on unexposed rear surfaces, shrinkage cracks in the wood, and gentle rubbing down to the red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf. The absence of modern wire channels or drill holes also indicates original candle use.

Mount sconces in pairs flanking a mantlepiece, over a sideboard, or bordering a central wall mirror to create formal symmetry. They provide architectural texture and soft ambient light when fitted with tall, slim beeswax candles or converted discreetly to low-voltage LED candles.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking the delicate gold leaf. Never use water, liquid polished sprays, or chemical solvents, as moisture dissolves water-gesso underlayers and causes irreversible loss of the gilded finish.
