Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Layered timber backing: cabinet construction made for early wall fittings.
Gilding rubbed through to red bole on high edges: decades of light dusting.
Early faux-drip candle sleeves: period decorative lighting covers.
Hand-carved acanthus and mask details: quality twentieth-century Louis XIV revival work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These early 20th-century French or Italian wall lights are crafted in the mid-17th-century Louis XIV style from carved wood and gesso with a gilded surface and an aged patina. Each sconce displays a top sun-mask motif, a shaped body with a central vacant carved cartouche and trailing husk details, and shaped twin arms featuring stiff-leaf carving, carved bobeches, and knozzles, complete with original aged candle-wax dripped papier-mâché lamp covers. The visible details include prominent scrollwork and acanthus leaf carvings, vertical wooden wall-mounting panels, and cylindrical candle sleeves mounted on round drip pans. Each wall light measures 66 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Suitable for residential use today, these fixtures hang above a sideboard or on either side of a fireplace in a dining room, hallway, or living room.

FAQs

Louis XIV style wall lighting, originating in 17th-century France, is marked by majestic symmetry, heavy architectural scrollwork, and prominent central motifs such as classical masks, sunbursts, and acanthus leaves.

Traditional giltwood sconces were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and layered with thin gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

authentic period-style pieces show evidence of hand-carving marks on the reverse, natural cracking (craquelure) in the gesso layer beneath the gold leaf, and gentle wear revealing the red or yellow bole clay base.

Giltwood sconces can be placed alongside contemporary artwork or flanking a minimalist mirror to create a high-contrast focal point that adds historical texture to clean architectural lines.

Dust giltwood fixtures gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry painters brush; water and chemical solvents must be avoided as they dissolve water-based gesso and strip gold leafing.
