This Victorian sterling silver bowl displays a polished silver exterior with a warm gold tone inside the gilded interior, a crimped rim at the top, and hallmarked stamps near the top edge. The round body features vertical fluting, leaf engraving, and floral chasing in silver and grey tones, supported by a plain rounded base. The piece measures 5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. In a modern interior, the bowl suits placement on a sideboard top or a dining table. It functions practically for serving sugar cubes, condiments, or individually wrapped treats, while adding a traditional silver and gold accent to an English country house table setting.

FAQs

During the Late Victorian era in the late 19th century, silver production flourished due to advancements in silversmithing techniques and increased demand for formal dining accessories. Small silver vessels, such as sugar basins, salt cellars, and pin dishes, were commonly produced with ornate relief work and fluted patterns reflecting popular Revivalist aesthetics.

Victorian silver bowls were crafted from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper for structural integrity. Decorative elements were typically executed using techniques such as fluting, repousse, chasing, and engraving, often finished with a gilded or vermeil interior to protect the metal.

Authentic British sterling silver features a set of officially stamped hallmarks. These typically include the lion passant mark for sterling purity, an assay office symbol, a specific date letter denoting the year of manufacture, and a makers mark identifying the silversmith.

A small silver bowl functions well as a decorative accent on a sideboard top, coffee table, or dressing table. It can serve as a pin dish, a container for small trinkets, or part of a layered tabletop vignette alongside glass and timber objects.

Clean the silver using a soft microfibre cloth designed specifically for silver polishing to remove tarnish without scratching the metal. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, and wipe the interior gently to preserve the thin gilded layer.
