This Victorian four-piece fruit serving set comprises two large embossed serving spoons, a pierced sugar sifter spoon, and a pair of grape scissors, all housed in a fitted presentation box. The silver-plated pieces display beaded edge handles, shell motifs, and gilded bowls detailed with repousse fruit and foliage motifs. The presentation box features a dark exterior and a padded red velvet interior lining. The utensils show no visible plate loss, and the bowls retain their gold gilt finish. Measuring 23 cm high, the cased set works well displayed on a sideboard top in a dining room, living room, or hallway during formal dinners or gatherings. It offers practical utility for serving fruit and desserts while serving as a decorative display item within traditional or period interior settings.

FAQs

A Victorian fruit serving set is a specialised collection of dining cutlery, typically comprising embossed berry spoons, grape shears, and a sifter spoon, created for serving fresh fruit and sugar during formal nineteenth-century dessert courses.

These sets were commonly crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver, often featuring gold-gilt interiors inside the spoon bowls to prevent acid from fruit juices from corroding the metal.

Authentic pieces usually display stamped EPNS or maker marks, detailed repousse fruit or floral embossing in the spoon bowls, beaded edge handles, and period-correct fitted presentation cases lined with velvet or silk.

A cased serving set can be displayed open on a dining room sideboard or bar cart to showcase the gilded details, or utilised during formal dinner gatherings as functional serving cutlery.

Wash the pieces by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh silver polishes on gilded areas to preserve the thin layer of gold, and store them inside their original velvet box to prevent tarnishing.
