John Pepys London.
A fine late 17th cent ebony and silver mounted table clock.
The 6? Gilt brass dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, mock pendulum, strike/ silent lever at 3 oclock and calender aperture at 6oclock.
The substantial twin fussee movement with six pinned knopped pillars later anchor escapement ( converted from verge ) striking the hours on a bell. The back plate finely engraved and signed John Pepys London.
His work is recorded in both Brian Loomes and FJ Britten as representative of late 17th cent clockmaking at its finest.
The clock shows clear stylistic influences from the great Thomas Tompion, the case of masculine form with finely detailed mouldings. the handle is identical to that of other Tompion clocks as are the escutcheons all of which are made from solid silver, together with all other mounts.
