Antique Victorian Miniature French Brass Carriage Clock

19th century
Description

A highly desirable antique Victorian miniature French four glass carriage clock with an eight day movement beautifully presented in a gilt brass case with bevelled glass panels to all sides and a moulded rectangular base. Miniature examples such as this are considerably harder to come by than standard size carriage clocks, making them especially sought after by collectors.

The case is surmounted by a shaped swing handle with decorative central knuckle and retains a rich aged finish. The white enamel dial displays stylised Arabic numerals with finely pierced blued steel hands set within a gilt mask. A circular viewing window to the top reveals the original platform escapement in motion, an attractive and mechanically interesting feature.

The rear glazed door allows access to the movement and the clock is complete with its winding key. A refined and elegant example of late 19th century French craftsmanship, perfectly scaled for a desk, vitrine or occasional table.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition. The brass case presents well with consistent age-related character. The enamel dial is clean and free from cracks. All glass panels are intact. The movement is complete and the platform escapement is visible through the top viewing aperture.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Carriage clocks were developed in France during the early 19th century, primarily designed as portable timepieces for travellers. Manufactured with spring-driven mechanical movements and sturdy metal cases, they remained popular throughout the Victorian era as functional and decorative objects.

Standard carriage clocks feature brass or gilt-metal casings fitted with clear bevelled glass side panels. The dials are typically made of painted enamel or porcelain over copper, housing steel clock hands and a mechanical brass escapement movement.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit heavy brass fabrication, thick bevelled glass panes, and a mechanical platform escapement visible through a top glass window. Stamped maker marks, serial numbers, or French production hallmarks are often present on the back plate of the movement.

A miniature brass carriage clock functions well as a decorative accent on a mantelpiece, desk, or bookshelf. Its compact scale and metallic finish pair seamlessly with traditional mahogany furniture, modern minimalist shelving, or structured desk vignettes.

Keep the clock in a dry, stable environment away from direct heat and moisture. Wipe the brass casing gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina, and have the mechanical movement serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
