Large Daum Nancy Art Nouveau Cameo Glass Vase Sweet Pea Flowers C 1900-44cm Tall

1900 - 1920
Description

Large Daum Frères Art Nouveau Cameo Glass Vase with Sweet Pea Motif, Nancy, circa 1900–1915

An exceptional large Art Nouveau cameo glass vase by Daum Frères, Nancy, dating to circa 1900–1915. The vase is crafted from multi-layered glass and finely acid-etched to create a raised relief of sweet pea blossoms and trailing foliage, a favoured floral motif of the period.

The decoration is further enhanced with hand-applied enamel highlights in green, pink, mauve, and purple, adding depth and painterly richness to the sculptural surface. The ground is composed of opaque white-yellow opalescent glass, graduating to a deep orange and yellow suffusion at the base, creating a warm, luminous effect characteristic of Daum’s finest Art Nouveau production.

The elegant form features a bulbous lower body, a tall tapering neck, and a flared, softly undulating rim, emphasizing verticality and organic movement in keeping with Art Nouveau design principles.

The vase bears an acid-etched “Daum Nancy” signature with the Cross of Lorraine to the lower body, confirming authentic production by the Daum workshops in Nancy, France.

A highly decorative and substantial example, suitable as a focal point in an Art Nouveau, Art Glass, or fine decorative arts collection.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau French cameo glass, popularised around the turn of the twentieth century by makers such as Daum Nancy and Galle, features organic botanical motifs created through multi-layered glass techniques.

Cameo glass is crafted by fusing multiple layers of differently coloured glass, which are then selectively etched away using acid or carved to expose contrasting underlying colours in raised relief.

Authentic pieces typically feature etched or carved signatures, frequently incorporating the Cross of Lorraine, alongside high-precision multi-layered glass detailing rather than enamel paint alone.

Place the vase near a natural light source to highlight the translucency of the coloured glass, pairing it alongside clean-lined contemporary furniture to accentuate its organic form.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild non-abrasive liquid soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, abrasive pads, or extreme temperature changes.
