19th Century Campaign Spirit Flask and Beakers

19th century
Description

This is an excellent and complete leather-cased spirit flask set, which includes two graduated beakers or cups for field use. The two beakers nest together snugly, and the glass flask with its star-cut base and bayonet-closing cap fits neatly inside them. The cap bears marks identifying the maker as James Dixon & Sons, as well as their bugle and banner logo, though the beakers lack any hallmarks.

The case itself, made from patinated hide, boasts a rich colour and comes with its original over-shoulder strap and adjustable buckle—both in very good condition and still fully functional. The initials "EHW" are engraved on both beakers, the spirit flask cap, and the carrying case.

Period: circa 1880

Size. 21cm x 10cm max Diameter.

Declaration

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Campaign spirit flasks were portable drink containers designed for military officers, travellers, and outdoor sporting enthusiasts during the nineteenth century. Encased in durable leather with protective carry straps, these vessels allowed individuals to transport spirits safely during expeditions, military service, or field pursuits.

These items usually feature a glass vessel housed inside a rigid leather case fitted with a leather shoulder strap. Metal fittings, caps, and drinking beakers were commonly made of sterling silver or silver plate to prevent corrosion and maintain sanitation.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-stitched leatherwork, natural age-appropriate patination, and fitted caps with screw or bayonet mechanisms. Silver or silver-plated components frequently bear makers marks, hallmarks, or registration numbers indicating their era of manufacture.

A campaign flask adds historical narrative when displayed on a bar cart, gentlemans library shelf, or console table alongside vintage books and brass accessories. Placing it within an open display case or alongside curated barware highlights its functional craftsmanship.

Keep the leather case dry and periodically treat it with a specialist leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking. Glass components should be wiped clean gently with warm water, avoiding submersion of any attached leather, while metal elements can be lightly buffed with a soft polishing cloth.
