This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware spill vase, dating from circa 1860, is modelled as two adult swans nesting with a single cygnet at the foot of a central tree trunk holder. The piece is finished in a glossy white glaze with vibrant orange beaks, orange interior colouring inside the tree trunk top, and hand-painted gilded accents on the feathered wings. Applied green bocage foliage decorates the base and the upper branches of the tree trunk form. Measuring 12 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, this decorative container sits upright on a flat white oval base outlined with fine gold lines. Today, this antique pottery piece serves as a traditional mantelpiece ornament in an English country house interior, bringing a touch of nineteenth-century folk art charm to a shelf, side table, or window ledge. It functions both as a small decorative display object and as a functional holder for spill matches.

FAQs

A Staffordshire spill vase is a 19th-century earthenware ornament designed with a central hollow cylinder or trunk to store rolled paper splints, known as spills, which were used to transfer fire from the hearth to lamps or candles.

These ornaments were produced using lead-glazed earthenware or soft-paste porcelain shaped in multi-part press molds, then finished with hand-painted overglaze enamel colors, gilding, and applied textured clay detailing known as bocage.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically feature flat, partially unglazed bases with small firing air holes, visible mold seams, slight variations in hand-painted details, and natural glaze crazing consistent with age.

Position the vase on a fireplace mantel, styled bookshelf, or console table alongside natural timber surfaces, modern artwork, or neutral pottery to create an intentional juxtaposition between period and contemporary design elements.

Clean gently using a soft, non-abrasive cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding complete immersion or harsh chemicals that could lift cold-painted details or gilding.
