Victorian furniture, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompasses a range of revival styles drawing inspiration from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo periods, typically characterised by heavy proportions, dark woods, and ornate carvings.

Cabinetmakers of this era predominantly used solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, frequently incorporating secondary woods like pine or deal for interior drawer linings and back panels.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, traditional wood screws, hand-planed surfaces, and natural ageing characteristics like patina and shrinkage cracks in the timber.

Pairing dark wood period pieces with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the rich grain and craftsmanship of the antique.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out, applying natural beeswax periodically, and dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
