Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century rustic country mule trunk is made of wood with later slate blue paintwork and brass hardware. The piece has a hinged top lid with a keyhole escutcheon, a lower drawer base fitted with small turned wooden knobs, decorative recessed mouldings on the front panel, and bracket feet showing signs of age and wear. Measuring 56 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the trunk is suitable for placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space as a storage chest. In a contemporary home, this painted wooden coffer provides useful storage for blankets, linens, or household items while adding a country farmhouse character to the interior. The weathered blue finish and traditional proportions make it an adaptable accent piece against plain or panelled walls.

FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional storage chest featuring a upper compartment accessed via a hinged lid, paired with one or two drawers built into the base.

Most 19th-century mule chests were constructed from softwoods like pine or hardwoods like oak, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with turned wooden knobs or brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery techniques, genuine age-related wear around handles and edges, original keyhole escutcheons, and layered painted finishes showing historic timber beneath.

A painted mule chest operates effectively at the foot of a bed, within a wide hallway, or along an entryway wall, offering practical concealed storage while adding visual texture.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping the surface free from harsh chemical sprays and excessive moisture to protect the historic painted finish.
