Description

This fantastic brooch features beautiful clear and emerald-coloured pastes, all foil backed and set into fully enclosed silver backs typical of the late 18th/early 19th century. A sparkling little piece of history!

SIZE: Approximately 3.2 x 3.2cm.

WEIGHT: 9.8g.

MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver, paste gemstones. The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None (tested).

CONDITION: Excellent antique condition.

ERA: Estimated Georgian-Victorian (c.1714-1901).

Paste jewellery from the Georgian period consists of high-lead content glass cut by hand to imitate diamonds and coloured gemstones. Artisans crafted these pieces with silver settings to replicate fine jewellery designs popular during the eighteenth century.

Antique paste brooches were traditionally fabricated with silver tops and closed-back settings. Metal foils were placed beneath the glass stones to reflect light and enhance depth of colour prior to sealing the reverse side.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit closed metal backs, hand-cut stone facets with slight irregularities, and crimped or pinched collet settings. Many original paste stones also feature a dark painted dot at the culet to simulate depth.
