Georgian Facet Cut Stem Wine Glass, Oxo Engraved Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English, engraved facet cut stem wine glass dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1780.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 5.2 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved and polished with an egg and dart (OXO) border under the rim and sits on a hexagonally facet cut stem and a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 11.3 cm (4.5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The foot has a distinct shear mark which looks like a small protuberance to the edge, a good sign that it hasn't been ground.

English lead glass weighing in at 120 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian facet cut stem wine glasses are 18th-century British drinking vessels characterised by geometric flat facets cut directly into the glass stem to catch light, frequently featuring wheel-engraved patterns around the bowl.

These vessels were hand-blown using lead crystal, which contained lead oxide to improve clarity, weight, refractive index, and acoustic resonance.

Authentic pieces usually show a snapped or ground pontil mark on the base, soft wear scratches on the underside of the foot, subtle hand-blowing asymmetry, and characteristic heavy lead content.

Antique stemware can be displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets, arranged across a bar cart, or used as decorative accents on a dining room sideboard.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding hot water and dishwashers to prevent thermal shock, etching, or accidental cracking.
