Victorian apothecary jars were utilised by chemists and pharmacists during the 19th century to store raw ingredients, herbs, and medicinal compounds, often featuring distinctive glass labels or painted ceramic cartouches.

These vessels were typically hand-blown from lead glass or soda-lime glass, featuring ground-glass stoppers designed to create an airtight seal for preserving perishable contents.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing, slight imperfections or bubbles within the glass, and hand-painted or reverse-printed glass labels rather than modern paper stickers.

They can be displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or bathroom counters to add clinical curiosity and historical texture to both minimalist and maximalist spaces.

Clean them gently using lukewarm water and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion if the labels are reverse-painted or vulnerable to moisture.
