Delft polychrome pottery originates from the Netherlands, particularly the city of Delft, where potters expanded from traditional blue-and-white designs to include rich red, green, yellow, and blue palettes inspired by imported Chinese and Japanese porcelain during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Antique Delftware is typically constructed from a buff-coloured earthenware body, coated with an opaque white tin glaze known as tin-enamel or delft glaze, and hand-painted with mineral pigments before being fired.

Authentic pieces often show crazing in the glaze, minor kiln flaws, hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, and historical wear to the edges and base. Many earlier pieces feature maker marks or initials on the underside, though unassigned items are also common.

These statement vessels can be displayed on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard as focal points, contrasting sharply against minimalist or contemporary backdrops to highlight their intricate polychrome details.

Antique ceramics should be kept out of direct sunlight, dusted gently with a soft dry cloth, and never immersed in water or cleaned with chemical solvents to protect the fragile historic tin glaze.
