George V Dept of War Fusee Dial Wall Clock, Immaculate

1920 - 1940
Sold by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is pleased to have for sale an immaculate and tastefully restored chain-driven eight day fusee wall clock dating from 1940 with the superior deadbeat escapement.

This is a government issue clock complete with the George V cypher and the pheon (broad arrow) to the dial The "war arrow" on clock dials is a marker used by the British government to denote property issued to its military forces. The symbol, resembles an arrowhead and has been used in heraldry since the 16th century to signify government or War Department property.

The gorgeous oak case has a fantastic patina with lower and side door, stabilising hook and turnkey lock to the lower door. The brass bezel is in excellent condition, locks into its swivel tab and frames the twelve inch dial beautifully. The dial surround is attached in the classic fashion to the main case by four wooden pegs and original hands complete the classic appearance.

Internally the square-plated movement which benefits from the more sought after deadbeat escapement (compared to the more common anchor escapement found in most clocks) has been stripped, overhauled, cleaned and oiled through and is covered by my three year guarantee. The manufacturer’s serial number of 52587 is stamped to the back plate of the movement.

This is a truly fabulous example of wartime history in superb condition and just one of many fusee clocks that I have for sale with more railway and government clocks due soon.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
