FAQs

Antique pine cupboards were traditionally utilised in European farmhouses and country cottages for storing provisions, linens, and household goods. Crafted from locally available softwood, these practical pieces evolved from utilitarian utility items into sought-after examples of vernacular furniture.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid deal or Scots pine, featuring traditional joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon frames, hand-cut dovetails on drawers, and iron or brass hardware. The timber often displays characteristic knots, grain variations, and signs of hand-planing.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction marks, such as pit-sawing or hand-adzed surfaces, hand-forged iron hinges, and period-appropriate locking mechanisms. Older pieces often exhibit natural oxidisation, shrinkage cracks, and layers of historical paint or wax finishes.

A natural wood cupboard adds warmth and texture to minimalist or neutral spaces, serving as a functional storage solution in kitchens, hallways, or living rooms. Its organic grain contrasts effectively against modern plaster walls or industrial finishes.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, which can cause wood to warp or split. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and nourish the wood occasionally with traditional beeswax to preserve the natural lustre.
