A George III Mahogany Serpentine-front Bedside Night Table

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th-century bedside night table in well-figured mahogany, the serpentine front outlined with crossbanding and stringing. The upper section features an unusual and elegantly curved tambour door, opening to reveal a storage compartment. Beneath, a pull-out commode drawer retains its original circular aperture, with a further dummy drawer front below for visual balance.

Raised on six square tapering legs with light line inlay, giving the piece a refined, architectural stance. Brass ring handles and original patination throughout complete the look.

A very good example of a Georgian bedside commode, displaying excellent craftsmanship and a sophisticated profile typical of high-quality cabinet work from the late 18th century.

A decorative and functional Georgian furniture piece, now ideal as a bedside, lamp table, or hallway accent.

circa 1790

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III bedside night table typically dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and features neoclassical influences, highly figured mahogany veneers, functional storage compartments such as tambour shutters, and square tapered or turned legs.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, often incorporating boxwood or satinwood stringing for delicate line inlay, with cast brass drawer pulls and handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, oak or pine secondary woods, historical wear to sliding tambour tracks, and hand-planed surfaces on the interior framework.

A Georgian night table works as a side table in a living room, an accent piece in a hallway, or a traditional nightstand alongside modern upholstered bedding to create stylistic contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and modern heat sources to avoid drying or fading.
