A Regency linen press is a two-section timber cabinet produced during the early 19th century, designed specifically for storing folded household linens and garments. The upper section typically features a pair of cupboard doors enclosing pull-out trays or shelves, resting upon a chest of drawers base.

These cabinets were primarily built using high-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany, frequently accented with flame mahogany veneers and inlaid boxwood or ebony stringing. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings and carcass construction, fitted with brass handles and steel locks.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, hand-sawn secondary timber on the back panels, and natural wear patterns around original lock plates and handles. Flame mahogany veneer cuts are typically thicker than modern machine-cut veneers and show subtle surface unevenness consistent with hand-planing.

A large mahogany linen press functions well as a focal storage piece in a bedroom, spacious hallway, or dining area. Combining dark timber press cabinets with neutral walls, modern linen upholstery, and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, cracking, or colour fading.
