Description

A beautiful pair of antique Swedish satin birch marble top bedside cabinets. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, they are beautifully designed and are a useful size. The satin birch has gorgeous grain patterns and colour tones, contrasting nicely with the original cream marble tops.

We have had them stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, they are in excellent condition. There is just some incredibly minor wear to the marble tops, with no chips or cracks.

FAQs

Satin birch furniture gained popularity in Sweden during the 19th century, prized for its distinctive golden figure and luminous grain. Craftsmen utilised this native timber to create functional yet elegant pieces influenced by neoclassical and Biedermeier design sensibilities.

These cabinets are typically constructed using solid timber frames veneered in figured satin birch, often featuring inset marble slabs on the top surface for durability and hygiene. Traditional joinery methods such as dovetailing are commonly found in the drawer construction.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction markers such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional timber shrinkage, historical hardware, and the characteristic patina of the satin birch veneer. Swedish pieces often feature distinct regional proportions and minimalist neoclassical detailing.

These cabinets function effectively as bedside storage or accent tables, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist decor. The reflective satin grain and cool marble top introduce texture and natural warmth to neutral or monochrome colour palettes.

Protect satin birch surfaces by avoiding direct sunlight and excess moisture, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax. Marble tops should be cleaned with pH-neutral solutions to prevent etching from acidic substances.
