Victorian scent bottles became essential accessories during the 19th century as personal hygiene and fragrance gained prominence. They were frequently carried in fitted vanity cases or displayed on dressing tables, often featuring precious metal mounts crafted by silversmiths.

These bottles typically combined blown or moulded glass bodies with sterling silver screw or hinged caps. The glass was often coloured with mineral oxides and decorated with enamel paint, while the silver lids featured intricate hand-chased or embossed floral motifs.

Authentic pieces usually bear British silver hallmarks on the metal mount, indicating the assay office, makers mark, and date letter. Genuine period items also exhibit hand-finished glass characteristics, such as pontil marks and period-specific decorative styles.

Displaying the bottle on a mirrored vanity tray, a dressing table, or a mantelpiece highlights its craftsmanship and adds a touch of historical elegance to contemporary spaces. Grouping it with other small glass or silver objects creates a curated vignette.

Clean the silver components gently with a specialized non-abrasive silver cloth, avoiding direct contact with the glass or enamel decoration. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the coloured glass and painted motifs.
