Victorian 18ct Gold Snake Ring with Old Cut Diamonds – Chester 1896

19th century
Description

A magnificent Victorian diamond serpent ring, beautifully crafted in rich 18 carat gold. Expertly coiled to embrace the finger, the snake — an enduring symbol of eternal love, loyalty and friendship — was one of the most romantic motifs of the era.

This elegant serpent is set with five particularly fine old-cut diamonds, the central stone slightly larger, tapering gracefully down the back. Their combined estimated weight is circa 0.50ct, with H colour and SI clarity, ensuring excellent sparkle and period charm.

Fully hallmarked at the venerable Chester Assay Office in 1896, this ring is wonderfully preserved — a testament to its quality and cherished history. Substantial in form, smooth in wear, and exceptionally stylish, it makes a distinctive heirloom piece for any jewellery connoisseur.

A superb and highly collectable example of a Victorian serpent ring.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Serpent motif jewellery became immensely popular in the mid-to-late Victorian era after Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with a snake engagement ring. Symbolising eternity, wisdom, and eternal love, snake rings were crafted throughout the 19th century in high-carat gold and set with precious gemstones.

Victorian snake rings were predominantly crafted from solid 18ct or 15ct yellow gold. The heads of the snakes were frequently set with hand-cut gemstones such as old cut diamonds, rubies, sapphires, or emeralds.

Authentic British Victorian jewellery typically features formal assay office hallmarks stamped inside the shank, indicating gold purity, the assay office symbol (such as Chester or Birmingham), and a specific date letter corresponding to its year of manufacture.

An antique serpent ring functions as a versatile statement piece that pairs smoothly with modern minimalist outfits or stacked alongside clean-lined contemporary gold bands to add historic texture.

Clean gently using warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush around gemstone settings. Avoid exposing historical gold to harsh domestic chemicals or abrasive materials, and store separately in a fabric-lined box to prevent surface scratching.
