This Victorian bulb vase originates from around 1850 and exhibits a French Chateau style. Fashioned from white opaline glass, the piece features a bulbous body, a slender constricted neck, and a wide flared collar finished with a dark painted rim accent. The surface displays hand-painted enamel floral motifs depicting a large white blossom with green and brown shading, paired with dark brownish-purple foliage and slender stems reaching up towards the neck. The object stands 14 cm high. A maker or decorator mark appears on the base of the vessel, though the specific attribution remains unknown. Placed upon a mantelpiece, this decorative glass vase serves as an accent piece in a traditional home interior, bringing Victorian craftsmanship and delicate floral detailing to a display space.

FAQs

Opaline glass is an opaque or semi-translucent blown glass formulated with tin oxide or bone ash to resemble porcelain. Developed primarily in France during the early nineteenth century, its popularity spread throughout Europe during the Victorian era.

Opaline glass vessels were mouth-blown using sodalime or lead-based glass mixtures. Surface decorations were applied using enamel pigments fired at low temperatures to bond with the glass surface, often complemented by gilt trims or dark rim accents.

Authentic nineteenth-century opaline glass features a smooth, hand-blown finish, often with a ground pontil mark on the base. Hand-painted enamelling typically shows slight raised texture and natural variations, unlike modern mass-produced printed glass.

An opaline glass vase serves as a focal point on a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard. Its opaque white surface contrasts against modern dark timber surfaces, patterned wallpaper, or minimalist shelving.

Dust gently with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking the object in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as prolonged moisture and friction can degrade hand-applied enamel and gilt decoration.
