Imari porcelain refers to Japanese hard-paste porcelain produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and exported through the port of Imari. Originating in the 17th century, it is recognized by its signature colour palette featuring underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, enamel, and gold detailing.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to form dense porcelain. The design process involves applying cobalt blue underglaze decoration prior to initial firing, followed by overglaze enamel pigments and metallic gilt detailing fired in subsequent lower-temperature kiln runs.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted variations in linework, minor firing imperfections, spur marks on the underside, and wear to the overglaze gilded elements. The reverse side often contains simplified underglaze blue branch patterns or spur marks from kiln support props.

These decorative plates can be arranged on wall mounts to create a gallery wall, displayed upright on plate stands atop sideboards or mantels, or styled inside glass-fronted cabinets to add historical depth and rich colour contrast.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or dishwashers, as these can strip or degrade the sensitive overglaze iron red enamels and gilding.
